evaluation - todd sweeney

1) In what way does your product, use develop or challenge forms of conventions of media products?
The film I decided to do is in the horror genre and is a cliché horror film with the main characters all being teenagers. It is based upon previous horror flicks where teens are lost in the woods and face problems from a local demon or ghost which haunts or hunts in that particular territory. The film is very similar to other films in its genre this is due to it being a cliché horror and has all the typical values of a horror film: death, screaming and a bad guy.
2) How does your media product represent particular social groups?
The main social group represented in my film is the typical teenage subculture of college friends. These are in the typical age range of 16 to 19. They will be all easy to relate to as they will consist of college students that are from a range of varying subcultures e.g. jock, Goth, geek and prep. As usual there will be friendships, relationships, love triangles and rifts. This will result in the teenage category being represented well.
3) What kind of media institution might distribute your media and product?
Lionsgate entertainment may distribute my movie as they are the lead company in the horror film category and have had a string of successful horror films e.g. hostel, the saw franchise, the descent, captivity, catacombs, Rambo, my bloody valentine, kick-ass and daybreakers. Lionsgate also range from small budget to larger budget films and this is probably the key factor to them being successful as they appeal to a wide range of customers Lionsgate entertainment would be ideal in the distribution of my film as they are an established company and will already have a loyal fan base, meaning our film may already have paying customers before marketing has started. Lionsgate will also distribute our film worldwide with TV adverts and billboards; because of this our gross revenue should surpass our budget.
4) Who would be the audience for your media product?
My target audience for my horror film would be 2 separate categories: one of them being horror followers (people that are interested in the genre) and also teenagers (this is because they are usually interested in the genre and can relate to the film). The teenagers will obviously be college students as these are portrayed in the film, also due to the age restriction of 18. Also horror fans will be attracted to the film due to its cliché horror style script and storyline. Due to the film being aimed at two markets gross revenue should be pretty reasonable.
5) How do you attract/address your audience?
The films release will be preceded by a heavy promotional campaign. This will consist of a small red carpet premiere, this will give our film media attention should as newspaper articles and online showbiz news spots, this will automatically give the film coverage and market the film as people will start to notice it. Promotional posters will be put on buses as this will be a crucial move in targeting the teen audience; this is because students are usually struggling financially and swill use buses for transport. A TV advertisement will also be used to promote my horror film, this will be aired during the advertisement breaks of typical teenage programmes this means it will be addressed to our target audience and hopefully will attract them to the cinema. Our film will also be addressed with internet adverts and an official website this will give the film more public notice. Also because Lionsgate will be distributing our film ‘from the makers of ....’ slogan will be used this will address our film to an already achieved audience, this could boost viewing figures.
as part of my evaluation i received audience feedback for my film.

6) What have you learnt about technology from the process of constructing the product?
From making my film I have learned how to use a video camera, before my participation in this film I had never used one before so this was a huge learning curve for me. I have also discovered how to use blogger and the process of updating and editing blogs. Another piece of technology I have learned is how to edit a film before hand I had never done this and struggled to start with when learning the process of editing a clip of footage. I also leaned about films and how they are distributed I did this through research and looking for information regarding my film.
7) Looking back to your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?
I have learnt that every factor has to be taken into consideration when making a film:
· Location – this can be crucial due to lighting and hazards such as mud and wet surfaces, also that it matches the script you have written.
· Choice of actors – making sure you cast the right people to take part in the film, bad actors can be unprofessional time consuming and result in an unsuccessful film.
· Script – the script has to be written to high standards in order to achieve full success for a film.
Other factors I have learnt is that time is spent to all possible advantages and is not wasted , for example if a scene is set in daylight the clip must be file d before the sun sets.
The most vital thing I have learned is to work with people are negotiable and give you full support, from early conflicts I have learned that working with stubborn people will not lead to success as someone will always ruin your contributions with their own . The best thing to do is to take a lead role and negotiate plans with a group that can be trusted.

SYNOPSIS, CAMERA ANGLES OF TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE

The movie starts by telling you the date it set august, 1939. It then shows you an extreme long shot of a mud hill with a weather shot, a long shot of farm fences, a pathway (that all zooms in a little on each shot). There then is a close up of cows going into a slaughter house, then the door to the slaughter house closes and the transition to the next scene is a fade in to the next scene. The camera tilts to show a man chopping up meat and then another person packing it and a close up on the "inspected" stamp that is on the packaging. The music at this part changes more dramtically to set the mood and tone of the movie. The camera then focus out and its a woman in labour, she shouts her boss for help then a close up and cut in as she grabs her prayer beads and shows a close up of her leg as her water breaks. A mid shot of her boss as he stands watching her and she asks god to help her, it then shows you her water again and it turns to blood, she then falls to the floor people now suddenly rush over to help. The boss tells a employee to get the hell out of here and shows a two shot of the couple as he whispers into her ear thats what you get for drinking on the job son. The woman suddenly screams out in pain and shows a point of view shot as if the womans if looking at the man and her eyesight is going, grabbing hold of the boss, blood rushing all over the floor. The woman stops screaming the boss looks down and the camera cuts to a point of view shot where he's looking down on the deformed baby. The camera then cuts away to a completely new subject. It shows a woman scavenging through the trash trying to find food, she then hears a baby crying and finds the baby that was born wrapped up in news paper. She wipes some of the blood off the baby, it then changes to the next scene with her carrying the baby up a deserted road in a wide shot and then shows you a house and her walking to it.

RISK ASSESSMENT

EVALUATION - LUCINDA CONNELLY

1. In what way does your product use, develop or challenge forms of conventions of media products?

My film is a horror film and I have tryed to keep it generally like a classic horror, for example, a group of teenagers in a wood is a common story line and is used quite often in a horror movie. Horror also usually includes some mystery, suspense and a monster/bad guy. I have tryed to use all of these conventions in my movie.

I didn't challenge forms of former products of the same genre because people usually expect some form of monster and suspense so I gave my audience what they'd expect from a horror movie. I also just wanted a simple story that isn't too complex so my product would be easy to produce.

2. How does your media product represent particular social groups?

My product represents particular social groups by having all the actors between 18 and 21, this is because the audience i'm aiming for is around this age and will appeal to our audience if there is people in the film of a similar age. My actors were all pretty casual and normal which represents students as a social group, they're pretty laid back. Which makes sense because most horrors are 18+ which is the age of students. The characters are not really from any particular "click" eg. Goth, punk, plastic, emo this makes the movie more open to a wider audience and if it was full of goths for example it may put some people off because they don't like them.

3. What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

For the UK I would try to get distributed by Blue Dolphin and in USA, New line cinema. This is because "The texas chainsaw massacre " was distributed by these and it was an independant film and had a small budget, I chose this as an example because my film would be an independent film as it is shot in the UK and also had a small budget so we couldn't include things that take masses of money like famous actors and locations that are far away. It's also a good example because they had a tiny budget and made loads from it.

4. Who would be the audience for your media product?

The audience would be for those 18 years and over, especially to younger adults. This is because the horror genre is usually too scary for those younger than 18 and most are rated 18. Also those who are older may not be used to watching movie full of realistic blood and gore and slasher movies usually excite those who are younger.

5. How do you attract/address your audience?

My film is for 18 years and older, so to attract this young adult audience I would use flashy posters and trailers with gorey images that look scary. I would also advertise on things like facebook and myspace.com because younger people use alot of social networking sites.
It is also for both genders and not really for any perticular social group. This opens up opportunities to do alot with the film because you don't have to keep it pg. 13 for children, you don't have to keep it butch and manly for male audiences and you don't have to have a soppy romance story line for the women. I have attracted my audience by producing a classic horror story, which should keep old fans of horror movies happy and the actors who are young are relatable to people who havn't been a fan of horrors that long.

6. What have you learnt about technology from the process of constructing the product?

I have learnt alot about technology from the process of constructing my product. I had to learn how to use the equipment, which i've never really properly used before.
I have learnt to not rely on one copy of something, as it could be erased/deleted. As our previous blog work was and we had to re-start it all over again. I have also learnt that when using a camera you should keep checking the footage to see if it has actually recorded something so that you're not left with nothing at the end, like what happened with me. I also know now that you should make plenty attempts at a shot because something could go wrong when editing. I also should have used a white balance because some shots in my product had different lighting.
I used imovie to edit the film. I cut the film up into separate shots and put the into order to create the film. I learnt how to change the volume of the different shots to make the wind noise lower and the voices louder. I also learnt how to add music to it and cut that up and fade it in and out between the shots.
I have learnt from editing with imovie is to save work every couple of minutes as technology, as great as it is, can be unreliable.

7. Looking back to your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

I have learnt alot about filming by working on my product. I knew what I wanted to get out of doing this film and tryed to shoot as much as I possibly could in the short time limit we had left after complications (having to start again, not enough actors, tripod broke and camera not working properly). I have learnt that working independently can be difficult but it has it's benefits including freedom to shoot when I want and what I want. I have learnt how to use a camera, which I didn't know anything about before this project. I have learnt that making out a big plan at the beginning and going into fine detail was a wrong way to go as it wasted alot of time and just lead to conflict between the group, from this I learnt to adjust and change as the project went along and to keep adding details to make the film better and to suit the needs of my cast. I learnt how to edit a film and where to add music to create atmosphere, I also learnt that you need to research into the chosen genre in order to know how to fulfill my audiences needs.
I have also learnt that it is important to think about location more into detail as there could be different hazards and complications, for example I kept tripping over branches in the woods, to rectify this I would choose a location that is a little safer where there are less hazards.

UPDATE

Shooting & editing is complete.
First day was a failure due to a broken tripod.
Second attempt was a failure also, due to some complication I had with the camera, where all it shot were the out-takes. However, I managed to extract some worthy shots from it but there were massive gaps in the movie.
Third attempt was more of a success, I managed to get most of the shot we needed, however there weren't as many actors as the second day.
Editing went well. I struggled with the lack of shots, but managed to get it done.

Character profiles

Jenny.

A skinny 18 year old, she is a quiet girl from a small New England town. She is pretty but keeps everything simple and looks like the girl next door type, her best friend is a girl called Kat who is quite the opposite to Jenny in every way however they've been friends since they were very young and love each other very much.
She doesn't really have much going for her in life, her mother died giving birth to her and has to take on 3 jobs to keep her father from losing the house, she doesn't have enough money for new clothes so people think she is a little weird and tease her, however she isn't the type to care what others think about her and always looks on bright side and stays strong for her dad.
She secretly has a soft spot for Jason even though he gets under her skin easily and are always argueing but he is dating her best friend.

Jason.

19 years old, he is the popular guy who everyone loves. He's the clown who's always hyper and smiling he dates Kat, the most popular girl in school. His ego is bigger than his head though deep down he has much more to him than just his looks. He's had a crush on Jenny since they were young however to keep up appearances he stays with his beautiful girlfriend Kat, who is only dating him to boost her own popularity as she's not very liked but if she is seen with someone people love she thinks it will make her more beloved. He enjoys teasing Jenny because when she's angry is the only time he can get her attention.
His fathers very rich and he's stuck in the middle on an unhappy marriage which makes him lash out on others, his father won't leave his mother though because she's threatened to sue him for all his money. His mothers an ex- model who got fired as she became too old and turned to the bottle and became a drug abuser and his father spends all his time gambling and spending his money on cheap whores.

Kat.

17 Years old. She's very into the girly role, she loves everything to do with clothes and makeup and will do just about anything to keep her status as the most popular girl in school, which mainly comes from pure fear of her rather than respect. She is very self centred around most people, but when it comes to her best friends Jenny and Lizzie there is nothing she wouldn't do for her. She always wears fashionable clothing that shows off a little too much of her figure but is too popular to be criticised by others. She has a large family but is the only girl with 8 brothers which has toughened her up over the years so she doesn't take crap from anyone. She's dating Jason but suspects he and Jenny have a thing for each other which makes her a little jealous of her best friend and a little over-protective as she doesn't want to become less popular.

Sam.

18 years old. Samn is a very shy boy who doesn't real talk to many people at school. He's a handsome guy with a heart of gold, He's best friends with Jenny and Kat even though they havn't known him as long but they're all still close. He's an only child which makes him occasionaly lonely and seeing as Jenny has so many jobs and a family to take care of he spends most of his free time with Kat.
He has a long distance relationship with his girlfriend Delilah but gets the occasional weekend away but sometimes stays around to go camping with his friends.

The Movie - Short.

This is a rough idea of what is going to happen within these 2 minutes, it includes a rough script, a few camera shots and direction.
[The story is a take on classic horror, it is set in the woods with a group of teenagers who get picked off one after another. However, rather than having a normal werewolf/monster scenario the reason why they’re disapearing is that they’re being “vanished away” by a demon shaped as a little girl to lure the teenagers away.]

A group of teenagers are walking in a large wood.
The camera appears to be looking through someone's eyes who is following them, hiding behind trees, walking slowly.
You can maybe hear slight breathing so you know theres someone there.
This is to resemble two things to confuse and trick the audience, it appears to be some form of monster or bad guy however the camera cuts to the group talking.
Kat - "So... shall we rest here for the night then?"
Jenny- "what here? but were in the middle of knowhere! there could be wild animals around or something."
The group laugh.
Character 2- "Well what did you think camping was?"
Jenny looks around, she starts to disconnect from the conversation.
Jenny hangs back a few metres whilst the others put down there things, there conversation becomes background noise as she looks around worried.
[Character 4- "She'll get used to it."]
Kat - "Here then?"]
[Character 2- "yeah sure, it's gonna get dark soon."]
The camera cuts back to the person watching them.. They move slowly up behind Jenny, the camera closing in whilst creepy music is playing. The person grabs Jenny suddenly, you only see the arms as it's viewing from the eye. The music cuts off.
She turns around relieved to see it was her friend but turns on him in anger and hits him.
"What the hell was that for?!... jerk."
He replies with "HAHAHA! oh god Jenny, chill, I was only messing with ya!"
"But still! I wish I never came on this damn trip."

Kat sees the two arguing and cuts in the conversation.
Kat- Jason! There you are sweetie! will you please help me find some wood for the fire with the others? Give jenny time to calm down, yano?"
Jason looks at Jenny and walks off with the group, leaving Jenny alone. She sits down on a log, folded chair floor etc. (depends what we can find.)

The camera shows the group walking away, talking and laughing then views jenny sat, looking at the floor in bordem. The voices of her friends fade and there is complete silence.
Suddenly there is the cracking sound of a twig. She turns her head to the direction then hears more twigs cracking coming from the opposite direction, she turns again whilst getting up, she looks around quickly and grabs a large stick off the floor. She catches a shadow running in corner of her eyes and faces it. Theres nothing there again.
Jenny- "This isn't funny guys! STOP IT!."
She hears a girl giggling from behind her. She turns and sees a shadowed figure pearing from behind a tree. She stares at it, unable to move.
Her friends returning from getting wood breaks her concentration, they're still deep in conversation.
Kat looks at Jenny and runs over and places her hand on Jenny.
Kat - "Jenny!? what's wrong? are you ok? You're so pale..."
The group stop talking and look at her.
Jenny -"You.. You.. came from.. over there... it can't have been you who.."
Kat - "Who what?"
Jenny turns to look behind her once more.
Jenny - "Someone was there.."
Kat looks up slowly to where jenny is looking, (The camera turns slowly with her and shows the empty darkness) nothing is there. The movie cuts off.

Horror opening sequence

It includes shots of woods, gives a good idea for what lighting should be like, camera angles, sound etc.

The 15 Certificate

BBFC classification covering films aimed at teenagers

The 15 certificate was introduced by the British Board of Film Censors on 1 November 1982, following an overhaul of its classifications as recommended by the Williams Committee. It is currently defined as follows:
Passed only for persons of fifteen years and over. No person apparently under the age of 15 years shall be admitted to any exhibition at which there is to be shown any film which has received a '15' certificate from the British Board of Film Classification.
It was a direct replacement for the AA certificate, the only difference being that the age limit was raised from fourteen to fifteen. In 1985, following the recommendations of the 1984 Video Recordings Act, the 15 certificate was extended to cover video releases.
While the increased age limit allowed the BBFC to be more lenient with regard to classifying certain films, it became clear towards the end of the 1980s that an additional classification was needed between 15 and PG, as Hollywood in particular was producing an increasing number of films aimed specifically at young teenagers. Since these films were considered too strong for a PG, they were usually given a 15 certificate, thus preventing their natural audience from seeing them.
As a result of increasingly public debate over this issue, the BBFC introduced the 12 certificate in 1989.
The BBFC permits the following within the bounds of the 15 certificate:
Theme: No theme is prohibited, provided the treatment is appropriate to 15 year olds.Language: There may be frequent use of strong language; the strongest terms are only rarely acceptable. Continued aggressive use of strong language and sexual abuse is unacceptable.Nudity: There are no constraints on nudity in a non-sexual or educational context.Sex: Sexual activity and nudity may be portrayed but without strong detail. The depiction of casual sex should be handled responsibly. There may be occasional strong verbal references to sexual behaviour.Violence: Violence may be strong but may not dwell on the infliction of pain, and of injuries. Scenes of sexual violence must be discreet and brief.Imitable techniques: Dangerous combat techniques such as ear claps, head-butts and blows to the neck are unlikely to be acceptable. There may be no emphasis on the use of easily accessible lethal weapons (in particular, knives).Horror: Sustained or detailed infliction of pain or injury is unacceptable.Drugs: Drug taking may be shown but clear instructive detail is unacceptable. The film as a whole must not promote or encourage drug use.

Shrooms opening scene , camera shots and synopsis

The film opens with a woman running through the woods , as this happens the camera is following her on a track. After this it shows an extreme close up of a bucket of blood that has been spilt. Then it cuts back to the woman running showing a close up of her feet following by a pan following her as she runs. The film then continues to flick through close ups of disturbing pictures such as maggots , knives , a blood covered hand and a bag covering a persons head. At the opening and closing part of the scene their are some titles , the titles are a basic white bold font on a black background, despite being very basic the titles are very striking due to the contrast of the white on black . The opening scene also has elements of torture , this could lead to an 18 certificate. The woman that is running is wearing casual clothes ; jeans , shirt and a jacket.Other mysterious characters shown as the film is cutting from scene to scene are all wearing a dark , Gothic and more horrific clothing . As she runs it gives the impression that she is running from something as you see the fear on her face. The setting is in a woods round autumn time as the leaves have fallen. There is an immediate impression that the film will be in the horror genre this is because it is set at night , there continues greys, blacks , greens and whites , this adds to the spooky feel as their is no colour. A large building is shown at the beginning , it looks like an old abandoned mental hospital . As this is the first thing shown it may be used continuously through the film as the scene is usually established at the beginning. although Shrooms is similar to our film it has a certificate of 18 , his is due to bloody violence. The film was also distributed by Vertigo Films (UK) , these could be a possible company to distribute our film.Shrooms didn't make much impact at the UK box office grossing a mere £300,000. The film may have been unsuccessful because of its low budget and lack of well known actors , this could be something to take into consideration when our film is being made.

The Poster For Shrooms

Shrooms

Shrooms is a 2007 horror film about a group of American students and their Irish guide who are stalked by a serial killer while out in the woods looking for psilocybin mushrooms. the opening scene shows a girl running through the woods , which is similar to our film . http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FNUrzDDaz8s

regarding the certificate

Our film will be given the 15 certificate because it will contain scenes of bloody violence and maybe strong language. The film will not contain hard drug use and sex scenes so will not be given an 18 certificate.

Horror movie age rating info

Horror movie will probably have blood & gore and scenes of a sexual nature. If we choose to do vampires they're percieved as sexual creatures through neck biting and the sucking of blood can be sexual and, or violent. Vampires may provide sexual arousal or stimulation for the audience. Also if not a vampire film it's a horror and will still be scary with scenes of violence and not suitable for young audiences so it should be a 18 rather than a 15 as we can't predict right now how scary it will turn out.

BANNER

Produced a banner, The blue ominous glow makes it look more appealing rather than just plain simple text and looks more like a horror style, also the woods in the background is from my own photo so it is completely legal.

Hey

Hey I'm also in this group with Lucinda and will post my work shortly

FILM TITLE IDEAS

"Your lifes mine."
"Innocence".
"LOST." (EDIT: This may be confusing as there's a series called Lost.)
"Mary, mary."
"No way back." or "No way out."
"Head forwards."
"Demoschilla woods."

I prefer Innocence. It's catchy and not cheesy.

IDEAS

Idea 1.
My idea for the plot is for someone (preferably a innocent looking girl) to be running through some dark woods and keeps checking behind her as if somehting is chasing her, she's not looking where she's going as shes looking behind her and runs into one of her friends (should be a tall sinister looking male) whos shadowed and he grabs her n pulls into him as if hugging her she looks up and she sees it's someone familiar and looks relieved, not knowing that really he's the killer. He takes her into a big scary abonded house in the middle of the woods as theres no way they can get out of the woods before the sun sets. In the house is where he comes up with ways of killing her like poisoning her tea but she doesnt drink it or trying to kill her in her sleep.

Idea 2.
The same as before just instead of one killer her group of friends are part of a cult whos brains have been tampered with and they've become insane and are trying to kill her because she didn't want to join in. If you want a monster plot though it can easily be changed to vampires this way.

Idea 3.

A group of friends are in the woods together theyre laughing some are messing around and picking on one of the girls, the girl gets panicky and suspects there's something in the woods other than her and her friends, she laugh it off as one tells her it will be a wild animal or something and to stop being a wuss. The group decide to take a rest and settle camp for the night, the group decide to play a trick on the girl and go off to get fire wood whilst running around in dark making noises and screaming as if something got them. INTRODUCTION

Hiya, We have started this blog late and well into the course due to complication with our group so me and Todd have decided it will be better for everyone if we create our own work.
However, As I came up with the story and the title I have chosen to use them but have left Group 4 with the house as the house was there idea and have added more to it.
We shall post all of our previous work and catch up with the roles our previous group members were in charge of.
